How to delete pages from a PDF without uploading it

· 5 min read

To delete pages from a PDF with AstralPDF, open the Split PDF tool, load the file, and replace the page range with the pages you want to keep. If a 10 page file has two bad pages, 3 and 7, type 1-2, 4-6, 8-10. The tool downloads a new file named split-<yourfile>.pdf that contains only those pages, built in your browser tab with no upload.

TL;DR: there is no delete button. You delete by listing what stays. The range box starts filled with the whole document (1-N), so you edit it down. The original file is never changed, and pages always come out in their original order.

Is there a way to delete pages without a delete button?

Yes, because deleting pages and keeping the other pages produce the same file. The Split PDF tool copies the pages you name into a fresh document, so anything you leave out is gone from the copy. Your original stays exactly as it was on disk, which makes this the safer way to delete anyway: you can always go back.

Delete pages with the Split PDF tool: load the file, edit the range down to the pages you want to keep, download.

How do I write the page range?

Write the pages to keep, separated by commas. A dash means a stretch of pages. Page numbers are the ones a PDF viewer shows, counting from 1 at the first page, not the numbers printed on the pages themselves.

You want to removeType this in a 10 page file
The first page2-10
The last page1-9
Page 5 only1-4, 6-10
Pages 3 and 71-2, 4-6, 8-10
Everything except pages 2 and 9 (keep only those two)2, 9

The last row is the opposite case: if you want only a couple of pages, just list those. That is extraction, and it is the same operation.

What quirks should I know about the range box?

  • Order does not matter and cannot be changed. The tool sorts the pages you list, so typing 7, 2 still gives page 2 then page 7. It removes pages; it does not reorder them.
  • Repeats are dropped. Listing a page twice keeps it once.
  • A page number past the end is ignored, and a range that runs past the end stops at the last page, so a typo like 1-40 on a 10 page file keeps everything. Check the page count shown under the box.
  • A reversed range such as 5-3 is read as 3-5.
  • If nothing in the box is a valid page, the tool shows an invalid range message instead of making a file.

What does not carry over to the new file?

The new document is built from the pages you kept, so document-level extras tied to the original can drop out. Bookmarks that point to removed pages disappear and page labels restart from 1, which matters if the original numbered its pages in a special way. Our guide to splitting covers this in detail, and it applies equally to deleting.

What if the PDF is password-protected?

Remove the password first. A file the browser cannot open cannot have its pages copied. If you know the password, the Unlock PDF tool removes it; after deleting the pages, you can set a password again on the smaller file.

What is the safe checklist before sharing the result?

  • Open the split- file and check the page count against what you expected.
  • Scroll through it once. A deleted page is gone from this copy for good, so make sure the pages you meant to remove are the ones that went.
  • If the removed pages held sensitive text, send the new file and keep the original private. The original still contains them.
  • If one of the kept pages is sideways, fix it with the rotate guide before sending.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete pages from a PDF for free without uploading it?

Yes. The Split PDF tool runs in your browser tab. You list the pages to keep and download a new file without the rest. Nothing is sent to a server.

Does AstralPDF have a delete pages button?

No. You delete pages by keeping the others: type the pages you want in the range box and the new file contains only those.

Can I reorder pages at the same time?

No. The pages you keep always come out in their original order, whatever order you type them in.

Will the original file be changed?

No. The tool creates a separate file named split- followed by the original name, and your original stays untouched.

Can I delete pages from a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Unlock it first with the password you know, then delete the pages, then protect the smaller file again if you need to.
