How to reorder pages in a PDF without uploading it

· 6 min read

AstralPDF has no page thumbnail view to drag pages around in, so you reorder by cutting and joining. Use the Split PDF tool to save each stretch of pages as its own file, then drop those files into the Merge PDF tool and put them in the order you want with the up and down arrows. To move page 7 of a 10 page file to the front, you make two pieces (page 7, and everything else) and merge them with page 7 first.

TL;DR: split into pieces, merge the pieces in the new order. The number of Split runs equals the number of pieces. The Split tool always sorts the pages it keeps, so each piece is in original order; the Merge tool is where the order changes. Everything runs in your browser tab and your original file is never modified.

Why can't I just type the new order into the page range?

Because the Split tool sorts the pages you list and drops repeats. Typing 7, 1-6, 8-10 gives you pages 1 to 10 in their original order, not page 7 first. That is a limit of the tool, not a typo on your side. The order of whole files, on the other hand, is fully under your control in the Merge tool, which is why splitting first and merging second works.

Open the Split PDF tool: this is where each piece is cut out, by listing the pages it should contain.

How do I move one page to a new position?

Take a 10 page file where page 7 should sit right after page 2. The final order is 1, 2, 7, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, which is three stretches of pages: 1-2, then 7, then 3-6 and 8-10 together.

  • Open Split PDF, load the file, type 1-2 in the range box and download. Rename the result right away, for example to part-a.pdf, because every download is named split- followed by the original file name.
  • Remove the file in the tool, load the original again, type 7 and download. Rename it part-b.pdf.
  • Load the original a third time, type 3-6, 8-10 and download. Rename it part-c.pdf.
  • Open Merge PDF and add part-a.pdf, part-b.pdf and part-c.pdf. Use the arrows next to each file until they read a, b, c from top to bottom, then click merge.
  • The tool downloads merged.pdf. Scroll through it once to confirm the order.

Open the Merge PDF tool: add the pieces, set their order with the arrows, download one file.

How many pieces do I need for each kind of move?

You want toPieces to cut from a 10 page fileMerge order
Move page 7 to the front7, and 1-6 with 8-107, then the rest
Move page 7 to the end1-6 with 8-10, and 7the rest, then 7
Move page 7 after page 21-2, 7, and 3-6 with 8-101-2, 7, then the rest
Swap pages 3 and 41-2, 3, 4, and 5-101-2, 4, 3, 5-10
Reverse a 3 page file1, 2, 3 as three pieces3, 2, 1

The rule behind the table is simple: every page that changes position needs to sit in a piece that can be placed on its own, and the untouched stretches can stay together in one piece. A full reversal of a long document is therefore not a good fit, since it needs one piece per page. For that, a tool with a page thumbnail view will be faster.

What should I check before sending the merged file?

  • Page count: it should equal the original. If it is lower, a piece was missed; if it is higher, a page appears in two pieces.
  • Order: open the result and scroll through it. The Merge tool uses exactly the order shown in its list.
  • Sideways pages: pages keep the orientation they had in the original. If one needs turning, do it before you split or after you merge, using the rotate guide.
  • Bookmarks and page labels: the pieces are built from copied pages, so bookmarks that pointed into the original and any special page numbering do not carry over. The split guide explains what is lost.
  • Password: a protected file must be unlocked first, and you can protect the merged result afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drag pages into a new order in AstralPDF?

No. There is no page thumbnail view. You reorder by saving pieces with the Split PDF tool and joining them in the order you want with the Merge PDF tool.

Why does typing 7, 1-6 in the Split tool not put page 7 first?

The Split tool sorts the pages you list and drops repeats, so the pages always come out in their original order. The order of files is what the Merge tool controls.

How many times do I run the Split tool?

Once per piece. Moving a single page to a new spot usually takes two or three runs, depending on whether the page goes to the start, the end or the middle.

Is my file uploaded when I reorder pages this way?

No. Both tools run in your browser tab and the original file on your device is never changed. The downloaded pieces and the merged file are new files.

Do I lose quality by splitting and merging?

Pages are copied as objects rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable and images are not recompressed. Bookmarks and page labels from the original do not carry over.
