How to rotate a PDF and save it that way

· 5 min read

Open AstralPDF's Rotate PDF tool, drop in the file, click the rotate button until the angle reads what you need, then click download. You get a new file named rotated-<yourfile>.pdf in which every page is turned clockwise by that angle and saved that way, so it opens the right way up in any viewer. The work happens in your browser tab and nothing is uploaded.

TL;DR: one button turns the document 90 degrees clockwise per click (0, 90, 180, 270, then back to 0). The turn applies to every page at once, on top of whatever rotation a page already had. The preview is a generic icon, not your pages, so you check the result in the downloaded file.

How do I rotate a PDF so it stays rotated?

Use a tool that writes the rotation into the file instead of only turning your view. Turning a page with a viewer's own rotate command often changes only what you see on screen, and the next person to open the file may find it sideways again. The Rotate PDF tool changes the rotation value stored on each page and saves a new document, so the fix travels with the file.

Rotate a PDF in your browser: pick the file, click rotate until the angle is right, download.

What does the rotate tool actually change?

Each page in a PDF carries a rotation value. The tool reads the current value of every page, adds your angle, and writes the sum back, so a page that was already turned 90 degrees and is rotated by 90 more ends up at 180. The text, images and vector graphics themselves are not redrawn or resampled, which is why nothing gets blurrier and the file size stays essentially the same.

What can I control, and what can I not?

TaskDoes the rotate tool do it?
Turn the whole document clockwise by 90, 180 or 270 degreesYes
Turn counterclockwiseClick until it reaches the equivalent clockwise angle (270 clockwise is 90 counterclockwise)
Rotate only one page or a few pagesNot directly, see the workaround below
See each page in the preview before savingNo, the preview is a generic icon
Upload the file to a serverNo, it runs in the browser tab

How do I rotate just one page of a PDF?

The tool turns every page together, so isolate the page first. Use the split tool to pull the sideways pages into their own file, rotate that file, then use the merge tool to put the pieces back in order. Rotation is stored per page and survives the copy into the merged document, so the pages you did not touch stay as they were.

  • Split the document into the stretch that is fine and the stretch that is sideways (for example 1-4 and 5).
  • Rotate the sideways file until it reads correctly.
  • Merge the pieces in the original order and download the result.
  • Open the merged file and flip through it once to confirm every page is upright.

Next: how to split a PDF, and what it loses: how to extract the sideways pages into their own file, and what extraction does not carry over.

What should I check before sending the rotated file?

  • Open the downloaded rotated- file and look at the first and last pages, because the tool's preview does not show your pages.
  • If only a few pages were wrong and the rest were right, a whole-document rotate has now turned the good pages sideways. Use the one-page workaround instead.
  • Keep the original. The tool never changes it, and rotating again from the original is the easy way to undo a wrong angle.
  • A scan that was photographed sideways is still a sideways picture of text. Rotating fixes the orientation but does not make scanned text searchable, because AstralPDF has no OCR.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Only the rotation value stored on each page changes. Text, images and graphics are not redrawn or recompressed.

Can I rotate only some pages of a PDF?

Not in one step. The tool rotates all pages together. Split the pages you want to turn into their own file, rotate it, and merge the pieces back in order.

Why does my PDF open sideways again after I rotated it in my viewer?

Many viewers' rotate command only changes the on-screen view. To change the file itself, save a new copy with the rotation written in, which is what the Rotate PDF tool does.

Can I rotate a PDF counterclockwise?

The button turns clockwise only, in 90 degree steps. Turning counterclockwise by 90 degrees is the same as three clockwise clicks, which reads 270.

Is my PDF uploaded to rotate it?

No. The file is read and rotated inside your browser tab, and you can confirm it by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads and rotating anyway.
